Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in an abandon farm house just east of Calgary Alberta Canada.

Time

A fellow photographer and I where driving around the countryside looking for and taking photos at different locations as we came across them. this one was close to sunset.

Lighting

The sun was setting as I looked out the window but the light in the abandon farm house was quite dark, I went with an HDR bracket of seven shots to cover the range with the thought of using only what I needed in post.

Equipment

Nikon D600 and a Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f2.8 E ED VR lens on a tripod

Inspiration

I walked into the farm house and was greeted by the view in the photo as you see it perfectly set up. I place my camera and tripod in the corner of the room and as the dynamic range was wide I captured a seven shot bracket to cover the range with the idea I could use what I needed and delete what I didn't later in post.

Editing

I can't remember to total number of shots used to make the HDR but the shots where blended in Photomatix Pro and finished with OnOne photo. I blend in the best exposed sunset capture to make the sunset look natural and un HDR like

In my camera bag

I run with a Nikon D300, D600 and a D810 and for lenses I use Tamron SP 15-30mm f2.8 Di VC USD, Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f2.8 E ED VR,Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f2.8 ED VR II, Nikkor AF 50mm f1.8D, Nikkor 16-85 mm f3.5-5.6 G ED, Nikkor 28-105 mm f3.5-4.5 D, Nikkor 70-300 mm f4.5-5.6 G filters: Format Hitech Filter holder Format Hitech Filter ND 10 Stop Format Hitech Filter ND 0.6 Stop Quantity 2 Format Hitech Filter ND 0.3 Stop Format Hitech Filter ND 0.6 Grad Format Hitech Filter ND 0.6 Reverse Grad Format Hitech Filter 105mm Circular Polarizer Tripod and a and more

Feedback

As for HDR I may use more brackets than needed some times over kill but you can delete what you don't need later getting back to the location may be harder that hitting a delete button. I do my best to make the HDR photos look more normal than not but some times an HDR look just works. If you start to see haloing stop ! re work the photo or use more or less brackets for post and if you still see haloing stop and delete the photo and move on. I don't over process in Photomatix Pro it docent do well for styling I use LR and OnOne for finishing and blending.
