Behind The Lens

Location

I took this head shot of the Eagle at Homosassa Springs. The original background was an American flag. I cloned just the head, and using Photoshop Layers, put the head shot on a solid black background.

Time

It was taken approximately 2:00 PM. The park has an area just for recused Eagles who for one reason or another cannot fly. They have a large American Flag as a back drop at one part of the Eagle area. My Eagle was perched right in the middle of the flag, which made for a fantastic Patriotric photo. I have super-imposed this particular shot on many Photoshopped photos.

Lighting

The original photo had perfect, soft sunlight lighting slanting into the area for the rescued Eagles. It was an ideal set up.

Equipment

My camera, at the time of this photo, 2012, was A Nikon D7000. G/5.6.at 1/40, using a 105 mm Nikon lens. It was hand-held. taken without flash.

Inspiration

It was my first visit to Homosassa Springs Wildlife Preserve. As I approached to area where the rescued Eagles were housed, I was so thrilled to see the American Flag hanging for perfect photo shoots. I must have taken over 70 different shots of different Eagles. In doing my post-editing on PS, I just fell in love with this head side-view of this majestic Eagle. Even though it is copyrighted, I have given so many people permission to use it on bulletins, folders, etc...with all of them being the one with the American flag in the background.

Editing

Photoshopping, as pretty much explained in the above post. First, I cropped it, then used layers to put just the head on the black BG. Fortunately, my focus was very sharp, so I did not have to do any sharpening.

In my camera bag

I currently carry a Nikon810 with a full-frame lens. I carry a D7500 for taking more unplanned random shots. Then I have my little Canon which stays in my armrest of my car.

Feedback

I realize a photographer who uses PS or Lightroom is able to manipulate photos as he/she so pleases, but when you see a natural setting that just screams a certain theme, take umpteen shots of that subject. You never know with or without manipulation and/or PS editing, you may find you have a winner. Never, ever...hesitate to fire away at subjects which intrigue you, excite you, fascinate you or just simply catch your eye.
