Fritz Sendlhofer lives high above Lake Zeller in the Alpine resort of Zell am See in the region of Salzburg, Austria. His father and grandfather were lumberjacks, mountain men who spent the summer months in the mountains felling trees. They used to build temporary huts called 'sodel’.

As a boy Fritz used to spend time with his father in the mountains, but chose not to follow in his father's footsteps when he grew up. Instead he became a plumber, working in Austria and Germany.
However, on retirement, Fritz built a sodel in his garden as a tribute to his forefathers and to the old ways of the Alps. Fritz wears traditional lederhosen and has an impressive beard, giving him the appearance of a true alpine Austrian. Fritz is also a Garibaldi Beard World Champion and has won numerous awards for his impressive man fleece over the years.

Some of you might recognise Fritz from The Hairy Bikers Bakeation tv show which was aired in the UK. Si and Dave met up with Fritz during their trip to Austria where he cooked a traditional Austrian dish for them called Pinzgauer Kasnocken (cheesy dumplings).

Me and my better half are currently on holiday in Austria so thought we'd track Fritz down and pay him a visit. We called the Zell am See tourist information bureau where they kindly passed on his contact details. He was delighted that we wanted to meet him and invited us over. We spent the whole afternoon with him at his home and even got to sample a glass or two of his home brewed beer. He is truly one of a kind and it was an absolute pleasure to meet him.
