Giovanni Savino started to work in photography film and television when he was just sixteen years old and learned the trade “hands on”, relying on the advice of some of the best photographers and producers in the annals of newsgathering and working on the side of important figures in modern journalism.
His intense professional career led him to witness and record many unique historical eents such as the fall of the Berlin wall, the conflict in the Balkans, the war in the Persian Gulf, the 9-11 attack, to mention a few.
In 1982 Giovanni Savino founded his own visual production company “Magnetic Art”, in an effort to document oral traditions and disappearing cultural heritages, a topic that fascinated him since childhood. Since then, he shot and produced a large number of photo assignments, live music recordings and documentary films, many of them in the Dominican Republic, probably one of the most under-studied areas of the Caribbean.
His work has received very positive media exposure and rapidly became part of important international academic collections, often being used as a reference and a teaching tool.
Giovanni Savino continues to work as a multimedia image-maker and consultant, based between New York City and the Dominican Republic, where he build up a photographic archive of images comprising over 90 thousand high resolution photographs, films and videos, ranging from lifestyle to religious ceremonies, urban and rural landscapes, environmental portraits and VR immersive panoramas.
