Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken in my spare room at home. It really looks like it was outside but that is the magic of photography.

Time

That was taken close to noon.

Lighting

I used three speed lights to create the lighting. One geled at the back and under the table to create the sky. It also created the horizon. The boot was on top of a piece of black perspex and the reflection of the blue in the background paper with the black created the sea effect. Then the second light was on the side and directional to make it look like the sun and a third one above camera with a difussor in front to fill the shadows a bit.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk III, Canon L series 100mm f/2.8 macro. 2x canon 580ex II speed lights, Canon 600ex speed light, Canon 90ex speed light (acting as master trigger only), black 1m square perspex and a manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

The photograph is part of what now has become an ongoing series named "Big World". It was taken as part of my final portfolio for the diploma of photography degree.

Editing

The photos in this series are pretty much straight out of camera. Other than the normal colour correction this photo hasn't been modified.

In my camera bag

I carry a pretty comprehensive kit.I have modified a carry on Samsonite rolling suitcase to be my "stealth" camera bag. In it I usually carry two 5d mk III bodies, a 50mm f/1.8 lens, 100mm L series f/2.8 macro, a sigma 85mm f/1.4 that I absolutely adore, my sigma 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, 16-35mm L f/2.8, 70-200mm IS f/2.8, 24-105mm L f/4, 2x 580ex speed lights, 90ex speed light, sekonic 758 light meter, Color checker passport, batteries, 5 phottix Atlas flash slaves, shutter release and intervalometer. Sometimes I may just grab a backpack and take a couple of things instead of the whole kit.

Feedback

Patience is the name of the game. You need to be aware that shooting at this macro level every single bit of dust, blue tack or anything else will show up in the photo. Double check everything and try to save time in post by producing the cleanest possible image in camera.
